Biography

Renée van Amerongen is a professor at the University of Amsterdam and the group leader of the Developmental, Stem Cell and Cancer Biology group at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences. Her research interests focus on WNT signaling, mammary gland biology, and breast cancer research. She is deeply involved in teaching both BSc and MSc Biomedical Sciences, serving as the coordinator for the minor in Biomedical Sciences. Renée aims to understand the cell-cell communication pathways that influence tissue morphogenesis and maintain healthy conditions, as well as how these become deregulated in diseases. She has built a strong portfolio in science communication, frequently engaging with diverse audiences and collaborating with artists and designers. Renée studied Medical Biology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, where she graduated cum laude in 1999, and obtained her PhD from the Netherlands Cancer Institute in 2005, also cum laude. Following her postdoctoral work at Stanford University, she joined the University of Amsterdam in 2013 and gained tenure in 2017, eventually being promoted to professor in 2025. Her laboratory continues to receive support from various grants focusing on fundamental biomedical research.
