Biography

Renée van de Vall studied sociology and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. She received her PhD in philosophy from that university in 1992 and has been teaching at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences since 1993. She holds the chair in the Department of Literature & Art and has coordinated and tutored courses on both bachelor’s and master’s levels. In 2010, she became the Director of Studies for the MA Media Culture program. Since 2009, she has also held the chair in Art and Media. Van de Vall’s research focuses on the philosophy of art aesthetics, particularly concerning the construction of spectatorship in contemporary visual and new media art, as well as the theory and ethics of contemporary art conservation. She is the project leader of an NWO-funded research project, ‘Transformations of Perception and Participation: Digital Games and New Strategies for the Conservation of Contemporary Art,’ and also coordinates the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network, ‘New Approaches to Conservation in Contemporary Art.’
