Biography

Renée van de Vall studied sociology and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam, where she received her PhD in philosophy in 1992. She has taught at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University since 1993 and currently holds the chair of the Department of Literature & Art. Van de Vall is responsible for coordinating and tutoring courses at both the bachelor's and master's levels and has served as the Director of Studies for the MA in Media Culture since 2010. Her research centers on the philosophy of art and aesthetics, particularly the construction of spectatorship in contemporary visual and new media art, as well as the theories and ethics surrounding contemporary art conservation. She is the project leader of the NWO-funded research project "Transformations of Perception and Participation: Digital Games and New Strategies for the Conservation of Contemporary Art" and is involved with the network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (NECCAR). Currently, she is also the project coordinator for the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network, titled "New Approaches to the Conservation of Contemporary Art (NACCA)."
