Dr. Rens Bod

Biography

Rens Bod is a professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Amsterdam and director of the Vossius Center for the History of Humanities. Bod investigates computational historical perspectives in humanistic studies and serves as president of the Society for the History of Humanities. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received several prestigious fellowships, including the EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship and personal VIDI and VICI fellowships from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. He has authored multiple notable publications, including the acclaimed monograph 'A New History of Humanities' and the groundbreaking work 'World Patterns: Global History of Knowledge' which explores the underlying search patterns across various disciplines. Bod's research interests include computational linguistics, computational musicology, and the intersection of machine learning with humanities studies. He has coordinated numerous public-private partnerships in the field of digital humanities and is known for developing the Data-Oriented Parsing model, a key technique in language processing. His editorial roles include being the founding editor of 'History Humanities' and the chief editor of 'Brill Open Humanities'. Outside academia, Bod enjoys photography and playing the piano.
