Biography

Renske Bouwer is an Associate Professor at Utrecht University, focusing on Language and Education. With an interdisciplinary background encompassing educational sciences, psychology, and linguistics, she combines research and the development of writing skills for both primary and higher education. Utilizing a blend of quantitative and qualitative methods—including eye tracking, keystroke logging, comparative judgment, interviews, observations, and text analyses—she investigates the cognitive, affective, and social processes related to writing. Her work aims to validly and reliably assess students’ writing skills and provide effective (peer) feedback. Renske collaborates with teachers to translate scientific insights into evidence-informed teaching materials for educational practice. Her fundamental and practice-based research has led to the creation of successful spin-offs, including Tekster and Comproved. In 2020, Renske was awarded the Comenius Teaching Fellow grant to develop an online platform for academic writing. She is currently the principal investigator for significant educational innovation projects that promote the academic reading-writing nexus and dialogic writing in primary education.
