Dr. Reyhan Durmaz

Biography

Reyhan Durmaz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests focus on Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, particularly Syriac Christianity, hagiography, and Christian-Muslim relations in the medieval Middle East. Durmaz's recent monograph, 'Stories of Christianity and Islam: Saints, Memory, and Cultural Exchange in Late Antiquity,' published by the University of California Press in October 2022, examines the transmission of non-biblical saints' stories between Christianity and Islam. He received the Joukowsky Outstanding Dissertation Award in Humanities for his doctoral work at Brown University in 2019. His book has been recognized with an Honorable Mention from the Middle East Medievalists Book Prize Committee. Durmaz has held fellowships including a Junior Fellowship in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks and a Faculty Research Fellowship at Fordham University's Orthodox Christian Studies Center. His research has been published in various academic journals, and he is actively involved in digital humanities projects, such as creating a digital archive of medieval churches and monasteries. Durmaz teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, covering topics from early Christianity to contemporary issues in Orthodox America.
