Dr. Rhian Touyz

Biography

Rhian M. Touyz is the Executive Director and Chief Scientific Officer at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre and holds the Dr. Phil Gold Chair in Medicine. She has a distinguished career as a clinician-scientist and has been pivotal in advancing cardiovascular research. After receiving her early education in South Africa, she joined the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal, progressing to become a Staff Scientist and Professor. Dr. Touyz was later recruited by the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute as a Tier 1 Research Chair in Hypertension before moving to the University of Glasgow to direct the Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences. Dr. Touyz has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Dahl Award from the American Heart Association and the Distinguished Scientist Award from Hypertension Canada. A passionate mentor, she has trained many PhD and MD students who have successful academic careers. Her research primarily focuses on understanding mechanisms of hypertension and target organ damage, delivering impactful clinical outcomes. Dr. Touyz has published over 575 peer-reviewed papers and is involved in various advisory boards worldwide, shaping the field of hypertension and cardiovascular medicine.
