Biography

Rhys Jones is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam. His scholarship encompasses media theory, historical materialism, and critical work on race and racialization, as well as queer decolonial theories. He has a particular interest in horror cinema and the ways in which socio-cultural production is mapped by political-economic determinants. His current research includes a monograph that critically re-evaluates psychoanalytic theories of abjection through case studies in horror cinema and contemporary art. In addition, he teaches classes on critical theory, media history, and contemporary cinema, including specialized topics on ‘Queer Decolonial Approaches to Film Analysis’ and ‘Speculative Cinemas’. Rhys's work aims to contribute to new, politically-oriented methods of analyzing abjection in media, literature, and theory.
