Dr. Rianne Van Melik

Biography

Rianne van Melik is an Associate Professor of Urban Geography at Radboud University. Her research focuses on the social complexities of urban domains in contemporary societies, particularly examining the mechanisms and processes that remain hidden and are key to understanding major societal challenges. She investigates how cities function, the production of public spaces, and access to work while uncovering challenges based on people's everyday practices in creating urban spaces, such as open-air markets and public libraries. Rianne primarily conducts qualitative research through in-depth interviews and participant observation. As an action-researcher, she is committed to actively contributing to the places she studies, engaging in long-term volunteer research and employing participatory methods that foster knowledge exchange with societal stakeholders, including housing corporations and trade unions.
