Biography

Ricardo Ainslie is a Professor and the Area Chair of the Counseling Psychology Program in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. His academic journey is marked by a profound engagement with the intersection of psychology and culture, particularly as it pertains to immigration and ethnic conflicts. Ainslie employs a primarily descriptive methodology rooted in qualitative inquiry, exploring how individual and collective identities are shaped within the context of their communities. His work encompasses a hybrid methodology he terms 'psychoanalytic ethnography', which is grounded in extensive interviews that explore the deeply psychological characteristics of individuals. His extensive research in Texas and Mexico has propelled inquiries into how communities transform in response to significant conflicts. In addition to his role at UT Austin, Ainslie has been a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and served as an educator at Houston's Center for Psychoanalytic Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan and a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley.
