Dr. Ricardo Sabates

Biography

Ricardo Sabates is an experienced Development Economist with over 15 years in addressing educational inequalities within the context of international development. He began his academic career as a research fellow at the Institute of Education in London in 2002, progressing to a senior research fellow at the Centre for Research on Wider Benefits of Learning. In 2008, he moved to the Department of Education at the University of Sussex, where he led the MA programme in Education International Development until 2012. His research brings a strong quantitative approach, focusing on measuring educational inequalities and generating insights applicable to marginalised populations. He has collaborated with numerous international agencies such as OECD, UNICEF, and the World Bank on various projects aimed at improving education outcomes. His work has contributed valuable insights into the factors influencing educational disadvantage, particularly in low-income countries. Appointed as a Reader in Education at the University of Cambridge in 2015 and later promoted to Professor of Education and International Development in 2020, he has led multiple funded research projects tackling issues ranging from accountability in grassroots education in India to the effectiveness of teachers in secondary schools across Africa. Furthermore, he has published extensively in reputable educational journals, addressing the intersections of health, educational access, and social participation.
