Biography

Riccardo Giomi is an Assistant Professor in the field of Functional Linguistics at the University of Amsterdam. His primary research interests encompass linguistic typology and diachronic linguistics, particularly the development theories related to Functional Discourse Grammar. His fascination with diachronic linguistics began during his Bachelor studies in Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Florence, where he started to explore the grammaticalization of the indicative paradigm in Latin, French, and Portuguese. This passion continued during his Master studies in Linguistics at the University of Lisbon, where he realized that his main interest was to integrate diachronic and typological research. His PhD research, conducted at the University of Lisbon, involved applying the framework of Functional Discourse Grammar to the study of grammaticalization from a typological perspective. This work led to his postdoctoral fellowship focused on grammaticalization, syncretism, and patterns of voice markers at the University of Liège before he joined the University of Amsterdam in 2023.
