Biography

Riccardo Sapienza is a Professor of Physics at Imperial College London and serves as the Deputy Head of Department Research. He investigates light in nanoscale architectures and metamaterials and is the director of the Centre for Plasmonics and Metamaterials. Since joining Imperial College London in 2017, Sapienza has been engaged in research that aims to understand and control light generated by nanoscale time-varying metamaterials. His studies encompass ultrafast nonlinear optical processes, fluorescence from individual emitters, and unconventional lasing systems, with applications in neuromorphic computing and light. Prior to his current position, he held a lectureship at King's College London in 2012. His extensive research experience also includes work at various prestigious institutions such as the Laboratories of Nonlinear Spectroscopy in Italy, the Institute of Material Science (ICMM), and the Institute of Photonic Science (ICFO) in Spain, as well as the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in France.
