Biography

Rich McIlroy holds an Engineering Doctorate from the University of Southampton, awarded in 2016, along with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and an MSc in Research Methods in Psychology, completed in 2008 and 2009, respectively. He is a Chartered Member of the UK’s Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors and the British Psychological Society, as well as a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. His research focuses on the design of smart mobility systems that promote sustainable and healthy travel, using public transport and active travel methods while enhancing environmental sustainability and physical health. Rich is involved in projects exploring systems that enhance transport gender equity and improve experiences for disabled individuals within transport networks. He has received £3.9 million in research funding and has published extensively on topics such as the impact of in-vehicle information on driving behavior and the use of sociotechnical systems approaches for road safety and sustainability. Currently, he is a Lecturer at the University of Southampton, teaching modules related to Highway Engineering, Transport and Environment, and Human Factors Engineering. He serves in editorial and leadership roles in various organizations, aiming to drive forward research and best practices in transport safety and ergonomics.
