Biography

Richard C. Allen, M.D., Ph.D., graduated magna cum laude from Duke University with a B.S. in chemistry and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at Baylor College of Medicine, where he earned his M.D. and a Ph.D. for his dissertation titled 'Molecular Analysis of X-linked Disorders Affecting B Lymphocyte Function,' which received the Sigma Xi Thesis Excellence Award. Dr. Allen underwent an internship in internal medicine at the University of New Mexico and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa, followed by fellowships in molecular ophthalmology and ophthalmic plastic & reconstructive surgery. He has a distinguished career in both academic and private practice settings across Houston, Iowa, New Mexico, and Stockholm. Before joining the Dell Medical School in Austin, he was a professor at Baylor College of Medicine's Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Allen is an active member of several professional organizations, having held various leadership roles including president of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in 2023. He has edited the journal Orbit and has a substantial publication record, including around 120 peer-reviewed articles and a widely recognized online oculoplastic surgery video atlas.
