Biography

Richard J. Baer is a Professor of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he also serves as the Deputy Director of the Institute for Cancer Genetics. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences from Rutgers College and completed his PhD in Microbiology at Rutgers University in 1981. His research primarily focuses on understanding the tumor-suppressing mechanisms of the BRCA1 gene, which is pivotal in preventing the formation of basal-like triple-negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive subtype of cancer. Baer's work emphasizes the role of the BRCA1/BARD1 complex in genome stability and how the disrupted functions of this complex impact cancer development. Employing biochemical and cellular approaches, his laboratory investigates related factors, including the DNA repair protein CtIP. Baer's studies aim to define the biological functions of the BRCA1/BARD1 pathway, particularly how the loss of these functions promotes breast and ovarian cancer.
