Biography

Richard Bégin is a full professor in cinema and audiovisual media at the University of Montreal. He co-directs the 'Cinema and Technologies' collection at the Presses de l’Université de Montréal. He is a member of CinEXmedia and a researcher within GRAFIM (Research Group on the Emergence and Formation of Media Identities). He is currently collaborating on the international research project ANR Representations of Music-Sonic Violence on Screen and is part of the international research partnership Landscapes-Catastrophes (16th - 20th century). He has published several works, including 'Un Cinema en Mouvement' and 'Impression, Projection: A Media History Between Cinema and Journalism'. His research focuses on mediality, artificial intelligence, media mobility (mobilography), representations of catastrophe, and the relationships between body, knowledge, and technology. Bégin is also a researcher-creator in music and sound art, exploring themes of memory and ruins. His sound works, blending concrete and (post-)industrial music, challenge the auditory perception of disaster. His teaching emphasizes audiovisual archaeology, documentary film, cybernetics, technology, and the fantastical.
