Dr. Richard Bindler

Biography

Richard Bindler is a Professor in Environmental Science with a focus on paleolimnology and environmental change. His research primarily investigates long-term environmental climate changes and the causes behind them, particularly the superimposed human impacts on these changes. He emphasizes the importance of understanding present-day conditions through the study of past processes that have led to the current state of the environment. His work utilizes natural archives such as lake sediments, which provide a continuous record that can offer insights into biogeochemical processes occurring over timescales longer than those usually covered by field studies or environmental monitoring programs. Bindler's research also delves into critical topics such as the acidification of lakes, atmospheric metal pollution, the millennial history of mining and metallurgy-related environmental impacts, land-use changes, and carbon cycling in lakes, often in the context of climate change. He has been involved as the chairman of the employment committee in the Faculty of Science and Technology since 2018.
