Biography

Richard Bourne is a clinical-academic pharmacist with over 25 years of experience specializing in critical care. He has been an NHS Consultant Pharmacist in critical care since 2009 and currently holds the position of NIHR Senior Clinical Practitioner Researcher after completing the HEE/NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Clinical Lectureship. Richard has represented pharmacy at regional, national, and international levels and has led the NHS England Adult Critical Care Clinical Reference Group for 6 years. He also serves as the Consultant Pharmacist for the NIHR Critical Care National Specialty Group and the deputy chair of the Pharmacy Sub-Committee at the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM). Richard is an active member of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM), contributing to the Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy Section and the Patient Safety Training Research Taskforce. Furthermore, he has joined the editorial board of CHEST Critical Care beginning in 2025 and is involved with the Adult Critical Care Pharmacy Leadership Forum, working towards the inclusion of clinical pharmacists in the quality care of critically ill patients. His research focuses on medication optimization for critically ill patients, the development of the clinical pharmacy workforce in critical care, and mitigating burnout risks among clinical pharmacists in acute care areas. His work is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly related to education and academic qualifications.
