Biography

Richard Budgell is an Assistant Professor appointed in 2020 at the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University. He is a Labrador Inuk who lectures and writes about Inuit health. In 2022, he began teaching a graduate course focused on Inuit health, which he developed at a Canadian university. Prior to joining Family Medicine, Budgell was a public servant for the federal government, working in Inuit health and Indigenous fields for over thirty years. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his exemplary public service, notably for his role in creating the Aboriginal Head Start program, an early childhood development program for Inuit and Métis children and families. Budgell holds a Master of Arts degree in Canadian Studies with an Aboriginal concentration from Carleton University and has been involved in various research projects addressing Inuit cultural safety in health care and health issues faced by urban Inuit populations.
