Biography

Richard Burger is an archaeologist specializing in the emergence of civilization in the Central Andes. Over the past four decades, he has conducted extensive research in Peru, directing excavations at significant sites such as Chavin de Huantar and Huaricoto in the northern highlands, as well as Cardal and Mina Perdida along the central coast. He has pioneered studies that utilize obsidian and cinnabar sourcing to better understand ancient patterns of interaction and exchange. With a prolific publication record, Burger has authored numerous books and articles on South American prehistory, notably on topics surrounding the Chavin and the origin of Andean civilization. He served as the Director of the Peabody Museum of Natural History from 1995 to 2002 and is currently the Curator of the Division of Anthropology at the museum. Additionally, he has taught at San Marcos University (UNMSM) and the Catholic University (PUCP) in Lima, and holds honorary memberships with the faculties of the University of Cuzco (UNSAAC) and the University of Iquitos in Peru. Burger has also been the Chair of Senior Fellows in Pre-Columbian Studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. and is the President of the Institute of Andean Research in New York.
