Biography

Richard Calis is an Assistant Professor of Cultural History at Utrecht University, specializing in intellectual history. His research primarily revolves around questions of cultural exchange and the ways in which individuals in the early modern world understood their surroundings. He is the author of 'Discovery Ottoman Greece: Knowledge, Encounter, Belief Mediterranean World Martin Crusius', which will be published by Harvard University Press in 2025. His work encompasses the history of Utrecht University, the history of Botanical Gardens, and the impact of households on early modern art and science. He has held previous positions as a Research Fellow in History at Trinity College, Cambridge, and completed his PhD at Princeton University. His academic career includes studies at the University of Amsterdam and the Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, as well as visiting research positions at various institutions including the University of Tübingen and Harvard's Dumbarton Oaks Research Library.
