Biography

Richard E. Carson received his Ph.D. in Biomathematics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1983. Since then, he has significantly contributed to the field of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and noninvasive imaging technologies, specifically focusing on the application of mathematical techniques to study human and non-human primates' physiology and pharmacology. From 1983 to 2005, he was a key part of the PET program at the National Institutes of Health, where he advanced to the position of Senior Scientist. In 2005, Dr. Carson joined the faculty at Yale University as a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Diagnostic Radiology and directed the Yale PET Center from 2007 to 2022. His research interests span ultra-high resolution brain PET systems, mathematical models for novel radiopharmaceuticals, and PET applications in clinical and preclinical settings. He has published over 400 papers and delivered 200 invited talks, holding positions on editorial boards of prominent journals in the field of brain PET. Dr. Carson has received multiple awards for his contributions to medical imaging and education, including the Kuhl-Lassen award and the Yale Graduate Mentor Award.
