Biography

Richard Carthew is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences at Northwestern University. His research focuses on the interplay between cell biology and multicellularity, using Drosophila as a model organism to explore these themes. His laboratory employs high-throughput experimental tools across genomics and genetics, paired with quantitative imaging to analyze cellular behavior. The aim is to develop a comprehensive understanding of how multicellular properties arise from collective cellular actions and the implications this has for understanding diseases such as cancer and for developing methods for tissue regeneration. Carthew has published numerous influential articles, addressing topics ranging from gene regulation to the metabolic processes central to cellular function. He earned his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1987 and has contributed significantly to the field of molecular biosciences through both his research and teaching.
