Biography

Richard Carvel is a Senior Lecturer and Assistant Director of Learning and Teaching (Curriculum Development) at the University of Edinburgh, specializing in Civil Environmental Engineering. He completed his education at St Andrews University, receiving a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and Physics in 1992, followed by an MPhil in Chemistry in 1994 and a PhD in Fire Science from Heriot-Watt University in 2004. His doctoral thesis focused on ‘Fire Size Tunnels’. Carvel's career includes roles at the University of Aberystwyth, Heriot-Watt University, and as a consultant for the International Fire Investigators. He has served as an associate editor for the Fire Safety Journal and edited the ‘Handbook Tunnel Fire Safety’. His research interests encompass fire science, particularly tunnel fire phenomena, ventilation systems, and fire dynamics. He has published over 20 journal articles and more than 40 conference papers. At the University of Edinburgh, he teaches undergraduate and MSc courses in Fire Science & Fire Dynamics and Models of Fire Safety, while also providing fire safety engineering consultancy services to multiple companies. He was a nominee for the 'Best Course' category in the 2018 EUSA Teaching Awards.
