Biography

Richard E. Chaisson, M.D., is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Epidemiology, and International Health at Johns Hopkins University. He received his BS and MD degrees from the University of Massachusetts and completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. From 1988 to 1998, he served as the director of the Johns Hopkins AIDS Service and co-founded the Johns Hopkins HIV Clinic cohort, which has led to over 130 scientific publications on HIV disease treatment outcomes. Dr. Chaisson is currently the Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Tuberculosis Research, a multidisciplinary center that has received over $60 million in grants to study tuberculosis from bench to bedside. His research interests include tuberculosis and HIV infection, global epidemiology, clinical trials, diagnostics, and public health interventions. He is the principal investigator on 11 research grants and leads the Consortium to Respond Effectively to the AIDS/TB Epidemic (CREATE), funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Dr. Chaisson has published more than 300 scientific papers and book chapters and has held various leadership roles in committees related to AIDS and tuberculosis clinical trials.
