Richard Craig has a multifaceted career as a teacher, performer, composer/improviser, and independent researcher. He studied flute at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland under Richard Blake and Mario Caroli at the Conservatoire de Strasbourg, France. Specializing in contemporary music, Richard has performed with numerous groups including ELISION, Musikfabrik, Klangforum Wien, the Estonian Radio Choir, and the RTÉ Orchestra, as well as taking part in international festivals such as Maerzmusik in Berlin, the Wittener Tage für Neue Musik, the Venice Biennale, and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. He is a member of the Riot Ensemble and a recording artist with solo discs released on the Mètier label and several chamber music recordings and radio broadcasts by WDR and BBC. Alongside his performance work, Richard gives masterclasses and seminars. He has been a Visiting Fellow in Performance at the University of Aberdeen from 2010 to 2012, and in 2015 he was appointed lecturer and Head of Performance at Bangor University, Wales, a position he held until 2019. He also served as an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield. Currently, Richard is the Director of Performance at the University of Edinburgh. His creative practice as a composer engages with visual and sonic arts, with recent works supported by Creative Scotland including 'Silent Structures' for flute, cello, and video (2022) and 'CLARION' (2023).
