Biography

Richard D. Deutsch is an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law, where he teaches International Commercial Arbitration and International Investor-State Arbitration. He is also a partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, specializing in international arbitration. Deutsch has significant experience advising clients on international arbitrations and risk management, specifically utilizing arbitration provisions in international investment agreements. His broad international commercial experience includes representation of major multi-national oil and gas exploration companies in high-stakes ICDR arbitration and significant disputes such as those involving energy sectors in offshore regions. Deutsch has handled investor-state claims, securing notable awards under the South American NAFTA framework and conducting extensive legal investigations related to compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has served on various arbitration committees, showcasing his commitment to legal education and the advancement of arbitration practices. Prior to his career in law, Deutsch was a sportswriter with contributions to major publications.
