Biography

Richard Dyck is a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. He has established a research program focused on zinc neurobiology, experience-dependent plasticity, adult neurogenesis, and brain injury recovery. His studies investigate the role of synaptic zinc in cerebral cortical development and plasticity, emphasizing how experiences, such as sensory inputs or injuries, can modify the organization of the cerebral cortex throughout life. Dyck employs cellular, molecular, and behavioral approaches with animal models to uncover mechanisms mediating experience-dependent plasticity and identify molecular targets that could enhance neuronal survival following injuries. His research is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, particularly focusing on functional recovery after traumatic brain injuries and strokes in neonates. Dyck is committed to translating his findings into actionable strategies to promote recovery and improve patient outcomes.
