Biography

Richard Fikes is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at Stanford University with a long distinguished record as an innovative leader in the development of techniques for effectively representing knowledge in computer systems. He is well-known as a co-developer of the STRIPS automatic planning system, the Knowledge Interchange Format (KIF), the Ontolingua ontology representation language, and the web-based ontology development environment. Fikes has also contributed to the development of the OKBC API for knowledge servers and to IntelliCorp's KEE system. Throughout his career at Stanford, he has led projects focused on developing large-scale distributed repositories of computer-interpretable knowledge and on collaborative development of multi-use ontologies. His research has enabled technology for the Semantic Web and advanced reasoning methods applicable to large-scale knowledge bases. Additionally, he has served as the principal investigator for major projects funded by multiple Federal Government agencies, including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Intelligence Community’s Advanced Research Development Activity (ARDA).
