Richard C. Flagan is the Irma Ross McCollum-William H. Corcoran Professor of Chemical Engineering at California Institute of Technology (Caltech). He earned his B.S.E. from the University of Michigan in 1969, followed by an S.M. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1971, and a Ph.D. in 1973. Flagan joined Caltech as an Assistant Professor of Environmental Engineering Science in 1975 and progressed through the ranks to become a full Professor in 1986. His academic career includes significant roles such as Executive Officer for Chemical Engineering from 1997 to 2013. His research interests focus on aerosol science and atmospheric science, with a particular emphasis on the physical, chemical, and biochemical characterization of aerosol particles. He investigates secondary organic aerosols, biological particles, and their health impacts, alongside studies related to atmospheric nucleation, separations, and solar energy. Flagan also develops methods for observing and analyzing particle formation in the atmosphere and utilizes aerosol science techniques for studying phase transitions in materials. He is actively involved in teaching courses related to aerosol physics and chemistry.
