Biography

Richard Gillis joined the faculty of the Desautels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba in 1991, contributing significantly to the development of the university's jazz education courses. He has held the position of Jazz Area Coordinator, overseeing the Jazz Band and big bands since 2003. He teaches courses including Brass Techniques and Major Practical Study. Gillis is also Artistic Director for the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra, and he regularly presents concert series featuring top jazz musicians in Winnipeg. His performance highlights include working with notable guest artists, such as Bob Brookmeyer and Rufus Reid. Additionally, he has conducted extensive research and produced creative works, including recordings and performances in various locations including Iceland and the United States. In recent years, he has focused on new significant music for brass by Canadian composers.
