Dr. Richard Guest

Biography

Richard Guest is an internationally recognised expert in biometric forensic technologies, with a sustained research record in biometric systems, security, image processing, and feature pattern recognition. Over the past 25 years, he has successfully secured £7 million in external funding and has played a significant research leadership role as the Principal Investigator for large national and international projects, including those under the EU Marie Słodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks and UKRI projects. He has been appointed as a Chair of the UK Home Office Science Technology Ethics Advisory Committee and is also a member of the Home Office Science Advisory Committee. His work involves active participation in ISO/IEC standardisation processes in the area of biometric data interchange, which is crucial for worldwide deployments. Prior to joining the University of Southampton in 2024, he held several senior leadership positions at the University of Kent, including Deputy Divisional Director and Head of the School of Engineering. Richard is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the British Computer Society and the Institute of Engineering and Technology. He is also an Academic Accreditor for the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College.
