Biography

Professor Hynes is the Daniel K. Ludwig Professor of Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an emeritus member of the Ludwig Center. He completed his bachelor's degree in biochemistry at the University of Cambridge and earned his doctorate in biology from MIT. Hynes has conducted postdoctoral research at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London before rejoining MIT as a founding faculty member of the MIT Center for Cancer Research. He has led MIT's Biology Department and served as the Director of the MIT Cancer Center and the Koch Institute for over a decade. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society in London and as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, among other prestigious honors. His research focuses on the roles of cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion in cancer development and progression, particularly studying how extracellular matrix (ECM) changes relate to tumor metastasis and therapeutic resistance. Hynes has authored around 400 publications, contributing significantly to our understanding of metastatic processes and cancer biology. His laboratory has also developed innovative imaging techniques to visualize tumors and metastatic lesions, targeting ECM proteins for therapeutic delivery.
