Biography

Richard B. Katskee is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Law and the Director of the Appellate Litigation Clinic at Duke University School of Law. He has extensive experience in appellate litigation, having served as Vice President and Legal Director for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, where he handled cutting-edge cases in healthcare, education, and constitutional law, focusing on the Establishment, Free Exercise, and Free Speech Clauses of the First Amendment. Prior to his current role, Richard had a distinguished career in various legal capacities, including being a longtime member of the Supreme Court & Appellate practice at Mayer Brown LLP in Washington, D.C., and serving as the Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. His educational background includes a J.D. from Yale Law School and an A.M. in political science from Harvard University. Richard has also taught law at American University Washington College of Law and professional ethics at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a special advisor to the American Bar Association’s Section on Civil Rights and Social Justice. Richard has argued cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and various appellate and trial courts throughout the country.
