Dr. Kibbey is a clinically active physician scientist dedicated to the treatment of diabetes and metabolic diseases. He obtained his undergraduate degrees in music (B.A.) and biochemistry (B.S.) from Trinity University, San Antonio, in 1991. He earned his combined M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 2000. His Ph.D. work involved determining the NMR structure of peptides related to the LDL receptor under the guidance of mentors Drs. R.G.W. Anderson and L. Gierasch. After completing a short-track Categorical Internal Medicine residency and an Endocrinology fellowship at Yale University, he became board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. His research has focused on mitochondrial metabolism and the pathophysiology of Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus, where he developed innovative techniques such as Mass Isotopomer Multi-Ordinate Spectral Analysis (MIMOSA) to quantify metabolic fluxes within tissues. His lab aims to understand how mitochondrial signals regulate insulin secretion and glucose production, thereby contributing to therapeutic advancements in diabetes management. He continues to engage in clinical practice at Yale Health while operating an NIH-supported laboratory that explores whole-body physiology in relation to Type-2 diabetes.
