Biography

Richard Ian Kitney is a Professor of Biomedical Systems Engineering at Imperial College London, where he also serves as Chairman of the Institute of Systems and Synthetic Biology and Co-Director of the EPSRC National Centre for Synthetic Biology Innovation. He was the founding head of the Department of Bioengineering and has held prominent roles including Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Kitney chaired the Royal Academy of Engineering's inquiry into synthetic biology and has been a key contributor to the UK’s roadmap for synthetic biology. He has played a pivotal role in establishing the UK National Industrial Translation Centre for synthetic biology, SynbiCITE, and has published over 300 papers in various fields, including synthetic biology, mathematical modeling, biomedical information systems, and medical imaging. His contributions to the field have earned him numerous honors, including being made a Fellow of the World Technology Network in 1999, an Academician of the International Academy of BioMedical Engineering, and receiving the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to information technology in biomedicine. Kitney is also actively engaged in public outreach and education, delivering lectures and participating in media appearances to promote science.
