Biography

Ph.D. Electrical Engineering, 1984, University of Newcastle, England. He served from 1985 to 1991 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at USC, later becoming Associate Professor until 1997 when he was promoted to Professor. Dr. Leahy has played a significant role as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging since 1989. He is also the Director of the Signal Image Processing Institute at USC and has been involved with UCLA's CRUMP Institute for Molecular Imaging and Laboratory of Neuroimaging as an Associate Member. His research interests include application of signal image processing theory for the analysis of biomedical images, emphasizing the development of computational methods for the formation and analysis of positron emission tomography (PET) images and their application in clinical oncology and gene expression imaging in small animals. He has contributed to the development of inverse methods in spatio-temporal imaging of neural activities through magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) data. His collaborative efforts have resulted in the creation of BrainStorm, a freely available software package for the distributed research community.
