Biography

Richard S. Lindzen is a Professor Emeritus of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. A dynamical meteorologist, he has focused his research on a wide range of topics, including climate, planetary waves, monsoon meteorology, planetary atmospheres, and hydrodynamic instability. His work investigates the role of the tropics in mid-latitude weather, global heat transport, and the moisture budget's implications for global change. Lindzen has contributed significantly to our understanding of the origins of ice ages, seasonal effects of atmospheric transport, and stratospheric waves. He has published more than 200 scientific papers and books during his career. Lindzen joined the MIT faculty in 1983 and retired in 2013 after serving as the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology. His distinguished career also includes notable awards such as being a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
