Biography

Richard Lofton is an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, with a focus on sociology and education. He is an applied researcher, theorist, and activist, whose work significantly influences policy and educational practices. Lofton’s research examines critical issues such as academic placement, diverse school environments, mentoring programs, concentrated poverty, and social-emotional development. His funded research includes significant contributions from organizations like the Spencer Foundation and the National Science Foundation. He is the principal investigator for the Asked Campaign, engaging with the voices of 180 African American students and parents in Baltimore to address education-related challenges such as violence and school infrastructure. Lofton's work aims to co-produce educational policies and strategies that promote equity and justice, ensuring that Black students, parents, and community members are integral to the solution for educational disparities.
