Dr. Richard Longabaugh

Biography

Richard Longabaugh is a clinical psychologist recognized for his extensive contributions to the field of alcohol treatment research. He joined Brown Medical School in 1972 and became the associate director of the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies in 1986, where he played a pivotal role in developing the center's research mission. Longabaugh’s research primarily focuses on behavioral treatments for alcohol problems and understanding effective intervention mechanisms. His significant leadership includes directing Brown's postdoctoral training program from 1986 to 2000, where he trained over 50 fellows. He has directed numerous studies on the cost-effectiveness of alcohol treatments funded primarily by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Longabaugh has published over 249 research articles and has received numerous accolades, including the Dan Anderson Research Award from the Hazelden Foundation. His current work includes collaborations with various universities, investigating the efficacy of different behavioral treatment methods. Longabaugh aims to remain active in research while mentoring junior colleagues in grant preparation and project development. He continues to serve on advisory panels and committees within the NIAAA, contributing his expertise to advance the field of substance abuse treatment.
