Professor Richard Macrory joined the Faculty of Laws at University College London in 1999, after previously teaching at Imperial College London and serving as the Director of the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford. He has significant contributions to environmental law and policy, having been a member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution from 1992 to 2003, and a board member of the Environment Agency for England and Wales between 1999 and 2004. Professor Macrory is the founding editor and chief of the Journal of Environmental Law, published by Oxford University Press, and serves as the legal correspondent for ENDS Report. He has held numerous prestigious positions including Hon. President of the National Society for Clean Air in 2005-2006 and chairman of Merchant Ivory Film Productions from 1988 to 2004. As an active participant in European environmental governance, he was elected chairman of the Steering Group of European Environmental Advisory Councils from 2001 to 2003. He was appointed by the Cabinet Office to lead a review on regulatory sanctions applicable to businesses, culminating in the report "Regulatory Justice – Making Sanctions Effective" which was published in 2006. His recommendations influenced the Regulatory Enforcement and Sanctions Act 2008. He is also a barrister and member of Brick Court Chambers in London. In recognition of his services to environmental law, he was awarded a CBE in 2000 and became an honorary Queen's Counsel in March 2008. He was elected Bencher of Gray’s Inn in 2010.
