Biography

Richard Meehan is a professor at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, Institute of Genetics and Cancer, at the University of Edinburgh. Holding a Bachelor of Science degree from Trinity College Dublin and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh, he has dedicated over 25 years to the study of DNA methylation dynamics. His research is prominent in the identification of methyl-CpG binding proteins such as MeCP1 and MeCP2, as well as exploring the non-catalytic roles of DNMT1 and alternate hypotheses regarding DNA methylation reprogramming in developmental and disease states. Currently, he is investigating 5-hydroxymethylcytosine profiling and its applications as a cell identifier. His contributions have been significant in understanding the genetic mechanisms that underlie complex biological systems and diseases.
