Biography

Richard P. Meier is a Professor at The University of Texas at Austin, where he has been a faculty member since 1986. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California, San Diego, and has previously conducted postdoctoral work at notable institutions including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Stanford University. His research primarily focuses on linguistics, particularly signed languages, and the acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL) among deaf children, including those with autism. He has published numerous works examining the modalities and transmission channels of human languages, specifically the visual-gestural modality of sign and the oral-aural modality of speech. Prof. Meier has served in various administrative roles, including Associate Vice President for Research at UT Austin and chair of the Department of Linguistics. He is also known for his contributions to the establishment of ASL language instruction in the College of Liberal Arts and held the Robert D. King Centennial Professorship from 2010 to 2023.
