Biography

Richard G. Milner is a professor of physics at MIT, where he has been working since 1988. He was born and raised in Mayfield, Cork, Ireland, and studied at University College Cork, earning a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Experimental Physics in 1978 and an M.Sc. in Theoretical Physics in 1979. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Caltech in 1985. His research focuses on understanding the nucleon and nuclear structure using lepton probes and analyzing spin observables with polarized internal gas targets. He has led and proposed experiments at major facilities including SLAC, IUCF, MIT, DESY, and Jefferson Lab, and served as director of the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center from 1998 to 2006, and as director of MIT’s Laboratory for Nuclear Science from 2006 to 2015. Milner has held numerous influential positions in international advisory committees, including chairing the Division of Nuclear Physics of the American Physical Society (APS) in 2007 and the International Spin Physics Committee from 2014 to 2017. He has been recognized as a fellow of the APS and received several awards, including the D.Sc. degree honoris causa from the National University of Ireland in 2010 and the Tom W. Bonner Prize from APS in 2020 for his pioneering contributions to the development of polarized internal targets and storage rings.
