Dr. Richard Mole

Biography

Richard Mole is a Professor of Political Sociology at University College London, specializing in the political dynamics of Central Europe with a focus on national identity and foreign policy, particularly in the Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). He began his academic journey studying German and Russian at Heriot-Watt University, followed by International Relations at the University of Cambridge. His doctoral research at the London School of Economics examined the interplay of national identity and foreign policy in the Baltic region. After completing his PhD, he worked as a Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Solomon Asch Center for the Study of Ethnopolitical Conflict and subsequently secured an Andrew W. Mellon Research Fellowship at UCL. Since joining the School of Slavonic and East European Studies in 2004, he has progressed from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer and then to Professor in 2019, during which he also held positions such as Deputy Director and Director of SSEES. Acknowledged for his contributions to education, he became a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and received the Provost's Teaching Award for excellence in teaching. He is also engaged with issues related to sustainable development goals, particularly in health and gender equality.
