Biography

Richard Purkiss is a Research Associate at the University of Manchester, involved in the Leverhulme-funded Making March project, which focuses on interdisciplinary analysis of the Anglo-Welsh frontier at the time of the Norman Conquest. His research brings together archaeologists and historians to create an integrated view of medieval frontiers. In addition to his role in this project, Richard is working on a monograph titled "East Anglia and the English Kingdom, c. 880–1066," which is based on his doctoral thesis. This book explores the processes of English unification and state formation, particularly the mechanisms by which the West Saxon dynasty asserted and maintained its power while expanding the kingdom. Richard has contributed to the field of Anglo-Norman studies and continues to write on topics related to social, legal, and landscape history in Anglo-Saxon England.
