Assistant Professor violin, Richard Roberts currently serving concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Prior Montreal appointment, eight years assistant concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra under conductor Lorin Maazel. Mr. Roberts received early violin tutelage from distinguished teacher Norman Carol, and at age seventeen, made his debut as a soloist with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra performing Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole conducted by Stanislow Skrowaczewski. He pursued studies at Indiana University, studying violin with Josef Gingold and chamber music with Janos Starker and William Primrose. He has appeared in solo and chamber music recitals across Canada, South America, Australia, the United States, and Europe, and has performed with orchestras including the Minnesota Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and Montreal Symphony. He has performed the entire cycle of Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin at the Cleveland Institute of Art and is a frequent lecturer in the Cleveland Orchestra pre-concert lecture series. He has served on the faculties of the University of Minnesota, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Conservatoire de Musique du Quebec. In the 2017-18 season, he is scheduled to perform in Japan, Canada, the United States, and Brazil, and serves as an editor for Ovation Press.
