Biography

Rich Roberts graduated with honors and highest distinction in Chemistry from the University of Kansas in 1987, receiving a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Yale University in 1993, where he worked in Don Crothers' lab. His research established striking stability of RNA-DNA hybrid triplexes and determined specificity of triplex recognition. Following this, he undertook postdoctoral work with Jack Szostak, a Lasker Award winner, focusing on designing and developing mRNA display systems for peptide and protein selection. In 1997, he co-founded the biotechnology company Phylos Inc. and later joined the Chemistry faculty at the California Institute of Technology. In 2006, he joined the faculty at USC as an Associate Professor in Chemistry, Biology, and Chemical Engineering. His lab employs mRNA display techniques for designing new peptides and proteins, addressing critical issues such as affinity, specificity, and biological activity. His research aims to control biological processes through chemical means and develop new therapeutic strategies.
