Dr. Richard Sadler

Biography

Richard Casey Sadler, PhD, MPH, is an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Michigan State University, where he engages in public health research through the Department of Public Health in Flint. He graduated with a BSc in Environmental Science Planning from the University of Michigan-Flint, and earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Western Ontario. Since joining MSU in 2015, he has expanded his expertise to work with a range of community partners and completed a Master's in Public Health at Johns Hopkins University, where he attended as a Bloomberg Fellow. Dr. Sadler's research aims to strengthen the understanding of the built environment's influence on health behaviors and outcomes, shaping land use policy to build healthier cities. His work integrates with community organizations and heavily employs geographic information systems to identify and address disparities in the social determinants of health. He notes, 'My experiences growing up in the Flint region, dealing with industrial growth and subsequent deindustrialization, have had a profound influence on the built form, and have shaped my drive to address inequalities arising from the imbalances between salutogenic and pathogenic properties in urban areas.'
